Wearing a 'new' helmet (autographed by Mark Webber) in the last and final round of the AutoInc Singapore Karting Championship (SKC), Jon can't wait to finish the whole season with another win. Although he can seal the championship by finishing not lower than 7th in the Pre-final, Jon is not leaving it to chance. He and his mechanic planned to maximize the opportunity and do a victory race in the Final to stand on top of the podium. In Qualifying, Jon managed to secure pole with a best time that's almost 0.3sec faster than the closest competitor. Jon’s younger brother, Josh, who has been training hard, found good pace to qualify in a respectable third.
Subsequently for Heat 1 and 2, both races were quite similar where Jon was able to pull away comfortably to win. This puts him in a perfect position to seal the championship on the next day. It was not the case for Josh, as he was involved in an incident that sent him to the back of the pack in Heat 1. With all the overtaking skills he had learnt from Jon, Josh was able to recover strongly and finished in fourth position. The Pre-Final was raced on a beautiful and sunny morning on Sunday. Everything went according to plan for the Team and when Jon crossed the chequered flag, he punched his hand in delight knowing he has bagged the championship and collected the maximum 20 points.
With the championship in hand, the Final race was just a victory parade but Jon was out to prove that he is the best. Although the morning started off being sunny, just as the Final was about to commence, it started to drizzle but soon stopped. The Final was almost a reflection of the whole weekend, as Jon was the first to cross the line again with seconds to spare. It was a cause for celebration as Josh managed to break away from the chasing pack and secured third place to put both brothers on the podium.Jon wrapped up the SKC 2011 with four wins, one podium, three Porsche design sunglasses (which was added to the winning prize from round 3 onwards) and overall championship title. This result is an improvement from 2010 and a remarkable achievement for Jon.
Comparing all five rounds across all five classes, Jon has set two records by winning 8 race finals out of 10, and scored the highest number of points - 190 in total. On the other hand, Josh, as one of the two youngest karters in the cadet and who only started racing this year, secured three podiums and an overall third position title - an equally remarkable achievement.
Throughout the five rounds of SKC , Jon has done his sponsors, Drakar Racing Team, Motul and Neuromath Pte Ltd proud. Thanks to the sponsors for their great support and sponsorships."I'm very happy to clinch the cadet championship for two consecutive years. I'm looking forward to moving up the junior category next year. I will train hard and do my best to achieve as many podiums as possible but I will not set my expectations too high. For sure, I will be racing in SKC 2012," said Jon.
Special thanks to the organiser of SKC for their fantastic effort in organizing and promoting the race, and at the same time, generating a lot of great publicity for the participating drivers.Last but not least, many thanks to all the supporters.
With only four days interval, Jon will be back on the track to race in the WSK introductory Race leading to WSK Asia Pacific 2012 to be held 26-27 Nov at Kartright Speedway. More info can be found on the following link:http://www.wskasia.com/
